About JB Pilon
JB Pilon is the founder of Buffalo Studio and the producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist behind every record made there. He's known for a warm, vintage-driven sound and a hands-on, collaborative approach to making records.
After years working between London, France and Sheffield, JB built Buffalo around a 48-channel SSL 4000G+ console and a deep collection of vintage gear, instruments and microphones — the kind of room where a song can become a record properly.
Selected credits
JB has produced, engineered and mixed records that have appeared on labels and partners including Warner Music, Parlophone, BBC, Pitch & Sync, Magnetic Eye Records, Whirlwind Recordings, Village Live, Spiritual Records, French 78, Adelphoi Music and many independents — across rock, indie, soul, alt-country, folk and beyond. Brand work includes Ben Sherman, Oatly, McDonald's, Imaginary Millions and Amber Music.
Approach
JB doesn't just press record. Most projects start with arrangement and song-doctoring — finding what's missing, what's in the way, and how to bring out a song's character. Tracking is usually live, on the floor of the live room, with the band looking at each other and the producer in earshot. Mixing is hands-on, on faders, through the SSL.
Artists describe JB as “a mad professor”, “a mastermind” and “a fine engineer who makes you feel relaxed and gets the best out of you”. The studio is set up so artists can actually feel relaxed — that's how you get a take that means something.
