Full Record Production
Bring us a song or an idea and leave with a finished record. JB Pilon — producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist — works closely with artists from arrangement through to final mix, all under one roof at Buffalo Studio in Sheffield.
We produce records for bands and solo artists who want their music to sound like a record — not a demo dressed up. JB's credits span Warner, Parlophone, BBC, Pitch & Sync, Magnetic Eye, Whirlwind and dozens of independent artists across the UK.
How a production project works
Pre-production
We start with the songs. Demos, voice notes, lyrics — whatever you have. JB digs into structure, arrangement, key choices, harmonies and texture before any tape rolls. Often this happens at Buffalo over a day or two with the artist; sometimes via shared sessions remotely.
Tracking
Most records get cut live to start — drums, bass and a guide on the floor of the live room — to keep the human feel intact. Overdubs follow: guitars through Fender Bassman, Fender Quad Reverb, Selmer Zodiac Twin or WEM Dominator; vocals through Neumann U87 (1971) into a BAE 1073 preamp and a real 1176 Blackface; keys on the Hammond L122 + Leslie, Fender Rhodes suitcase and Casio Casiotone.
Mixing
Mixing happens through the SSL 4000G+ with vintage outboard — LA2A, 1176 Blackface, Manley MU, Distressors, BAE 10DCF, Evan Super Echo. Records leave Buffalo three-dimensional and ready for mastering. Read more about how we mix.
Who we work with
Buffalo records bands and solo artists across rock, indie, soul, alt-country, folk, post-rock and beyond. JB has worked on releases for labels including Warner Music, Parlophone, Magnetic Eye Records, Whirlwind Recordings and many independents. We'll work with major-label artists, self-funded debuts and everything in between — what matters is the song.
